DataCite metadata has a very flexible Subject property, with sub-properties SubjectScheme, SchemeURI, and ValueURI that can allow the inclusion of any disciplinary vocabulary. There are many discipline classification schemes, but the most widely used generic classification scheme is the OECD Fields of Science classification with six top-level categories and 42 subcategories.
All the metadata is free to access and review. These are recorded in the metadata for DataCite's registered content. The data is ultimately supplied by DataCite members who are the publishers and 'owners' of the registered content. Only Relations between DataCite DOIs and Crossref DOIs are included. We connect you to the DataCite Member community, which is full of passionate people who share experience and continue to support best practice. Our metadata schema is extensive and has been adopted by other PID service providers globally. In order to create new DOIs and assign them to your content, it is necessary to become a DataCite member or work with one of the current members. Through the DOI Fabrica web interface or the API of the DataCite Metadata Store you will be able to submit a name, a metadata description following the DataCite Metadata Schema and at least one URL of the object to create a DOI.
